Gutenberg-Intermedia

The Masters Programme Gutenberg-Intermedia of the University of Applied Sciences, Mainz, aims to qualify up to 16 particularly gifted Bachelor and Diploma graduates in the areas of interdisciplinary medial design practice and research. The objective is to deepen their design qualifications and widen their conceptual and organisational skills.

The media in which design plays its part nowadays are undergoing a process of radical change, and so does the role of the spectator, who is more and more assuming the role of an active participant in the design processes. Consequently, the role and the self-image of the designer has changed, too, insofar as they see themselves less and less in the traditional role of the graphic designer who creatively «translates» the given themes. Instead they assume the role of «visual authors» who are taking responsibility for the contents, and who in their designs reflect social, technical and cultural contexts, with whole teams implementing substantial design projects.

The Gutenberg-Intermedia Programme teaches the skills necessary for these processes. This is done within the framework of intermedial design projects, but also through the development and completion of an individual Master’s Thesis.

Design in Mainz

Mainz, the city where Johannes Gutenberg invented printing with movable letters, today is home of one of Germany’s largest design faculties, including Communication Design, Media Design and Interior Architecture. Communication Design in Mainz is influenced by its closeness to the Rhine, to Frankfurt and the whole Rhine-Main Region, one of Europe’s strongest economic regions. The Rhine river represents the encounter of movement and rest – an ideal environment for concentration and inspiration.

Career Perspectives

Graduates of the Master Programme will mainly work in leading positions where a high level of professional and personnel competence is required. Apart from being self employed with one’s own enterprise, there are the professional areas of the Art Director, the Creative Director, the Communication Designer in Education and Research working for agencies, publishers, design studios, cultural institutions and the design departments in industry and the media. The Master of Arts Degree is also a requirement for candidates wishing to study for a PhD, and it qualifies for a career in senior service.

Studying and Family Life

The Mainz University of Applied Sciences has been awarded the Certificate of «Family Friendly University». All students with children over the age of six months are guaranteed places with daycares providers. Further details about the network of daycares providers can be obtained from the Women’s Representative of the University.
